I know that this is two weeks early but this is the mid-season finale and REIGN FOR GOODNESS SAKE so why not have one up there.
I really think this episode was well done from the slow burn beginning to the epic fight. I view Mon-El as a temporary distraction. Kara has a heart and it still struggles after 7 months. I don’t mind the scenario because it sets us up for the Legion. Remember this is ancient history for them and they know what will happen. Imra does say Kara will be alright.
I am not so worried about the shipping; it’s just a sidebar to the real action. This season is about Kara truly finding herself and I believe she will. I’ll make a wild prediction: both Colville and Ruby are the keys to this season. They will be the catalysts for solving the Reign problem.
As for Odette Annable, she is fantastic and I look forward to part 2 in January. I have no idea what her fate will be, but if there is someone who deserves to be a a regular cast member, it is she. Also my hat’s off to Garcia. Great to have you back. I’ve missed you.

I saw Kara telling them that she never had best friends, meant female best friends. A female friend, best friend, etc....is far different than a male best friend. No matter how much Kara sees Winn and James as her friends, there will ALWAYS be that block in the relationship of.....you said you loved me from Winn, and I thought I loved you to James....that right there keeps their friendships in a far different place as far as a deep relationship.
One of the things that I see that some are having a problem with is that some are not use to seeing strong female intimate friendships that are real and yet aren't anything but a strong, intimate friendship. It is a different friendship than a girl and a guy will have....

Really great last fight scenes that makes the all episode for me. The looks Kara are given are amazing in it.
Melissa Benoist killed every scene she was in.
I'm still not a fan of Ruby in general. And i didn't really cared about the James / Lena field trip adventure.
1) It's maybe the occasion to make some changes in the Supergirl costume.
2) I really would be glad to see Cat Grant coming back for Kara right now.

Does anyone here think that the final scene with Ruby is a hint that Reign will gradually look different down the line (i.e. comic book Reign)?
I'm thinking could be a couple of things....
1. Once the mask is removed it is shown that Kara did get some solid punches in and Sam is looking a little worse for wear after the battle.
or
2. It is the same as the bedroom scene when Ruby wakes her up, and there was this weird, like...split second look on Sam's face when she was about to let Ruby have it for letting her oversleep but then weirdly went into "it's pancakes......" or whatever she said in a fun way. I honestly thought though that she was about to totally go off on Ruby. This may be the same thing....

Definitely, Jondix. With Kara's possible "demise" being broadcast, I could see Cat actually revealing to Alex that she's knows, and calls her so she can see Kara. And, I could see Alex agreeing to take Cat to Kara.
Kara could definitely use a Cat talk when she wakes up. Cat might not have Alex’s number unless she got it in the bar during S2E21. Cat could definitely call James or even Winn. I could see either James or Winn taking Cat to see a recovering Kara with Alex and J’onn’s blessing.

One thing that I didn't like was to have James, the Guardian, just stand around watching and monitoring traffic. Obviously, he would never have beaten Reign, but I feel a true hero would have sacrificed himself in order to try to help Supergirl. And if it was a question of him not wanting to reveal himself, well, that's an even bigger issue.
I've seen a few people mention this, as well as, the DEO not helping. I haven't had a chance to watch it, again, just yet. But from what I remember, to me everyone just looked completely stunned at what they were watching. For the DEO...based on how long it seemed to take Alex to get to Kara (granted, it WAS in slow-mo...if I'm remembering correctly)...I don't think the DEO was actually on site at their final fighting area. I'm thinking they were having to relocate themselves. James was either just shocked, or knew Kara would want him to stay with Lena, or... He just knew he'd suck.

I can picture Lena saying something like "Kara Danvers we will talk about why you didn't trust me but right now it's more important that we figure out how to beat this thing".
Yes, ma'am. That! Plus... Lena DOES tend to call Kara by her full "Earth" name when she feels Kara has been naughty. lol So, yeah... I'd be totally down for this being how Lena finds out.
You might credit Lena with assuming that Kara thought that giving away the secret would endanger her, Lena, not to mention that three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead. Luthors are taught to respect secrets.

James would have done nothing against Reign. Him stepping in is no different to Alex or Winn stepping in. In fact Alex is better than him.Yes, I'm not stating that it would have made any difference. It's that he didn't even make an attempt to help. I can guarantee you that if Alex was there, she would have done everything she could have to help even if it meant dying by doing so. James is a self-proclaimed hero, Superman's best bud and one of Kara's closest friends. All factors that should have pushed him into the fight. I don't think it's a James issue, just a writing issue. They just shouldn't have put him in that scene in the first place.
Alex was there. Alex did nothing.
She ran up with the DEO agents after Kara was dropped from the sky scraper, we never saw her before that.....James was there with Lena the entire fight once it ended up on the street....all he did was tell everyone to get back.
HOWEVER, IMO, James would have been more of a distraction to Kara than a help at that point.

I'm probably in the minority but, I don't think that Lena should find out. I really don't see a necessity for it. Everything that has happened can either be excused or covered by J'onn. And with Lillian as her mother and Lex as her brother, Lena knowing would do more harm than good to Kara. It would just be another door opened to the Luthors and the rest of the world finding out and getting to Kara. Not to mention the fact that we still don't know how Lena is going to be down the road, if she will stay on the right side of morality or not.
I think that the way the plot is set, Lena and Kara are probably the ones who want to save Sam instead of destroying her. Their relationship can be the only one (with Ruby's) capable of doing that. I don't know if in that case, knowing about Reign and Supergirl identity isn't necessery.
***Editing this so I don't double post because I forgot to ask about Supergirl's suit. From the comics, is it supposed to have some type of special powers or is it reinforced in some way? The aftereffects of Reign's laser to her chest with the cloth ripped open but, the emblem still showing through underneath gave that impression.
Great insights to know for sur

Every time I re-watch the episode, I get to this scene and I have to chuckle a little. Obviously, the scenario is not a funny situation but, I can't help but laugh a little at the guy kneeling down behind Alex. Here we have a big ole' spotlight shining down on Supergirl, flooding the area with light and then we have this guy, who's holding a pin-light in an attempt to help shed some light on the area.![]()

Makes me laugh in an otherwise very dreary scene.
Bah ha ha ha great catch, Sully. lol Umm... From a photography teacher, let's just call it...the "fill light." Maybe he learned it from a photo class back in high school.

Alex told Kara to go to her alien side. That may have been the wrong answer, at least if they ever work out who Reign is. Appealing to Reign through Ruby may be the right answer.

So, I have no way to prove this. It's just a theory about that last scene, where Ruby comes down for Christmas and we see Sam at the window, possibly as Reign.
I think it's too early and too convenient for Ruby to find out about her mother this way. I think that ending was a red herring.
In that scene, we see Sam at the window, her hands kinda shaking or twitching, and then she turns to see Ruby.
I think it's possible that she's standing there, her hands shaking, because she's seen the news, and doesn't know how to tell Ruby what happened to Supergirl. We've seen multiple times that Supergirl is absolutely Ruby's hero. So to wake up on Christmas day and see the news about what happened to her...I think that would be really hard for Sam. And that's where episode 10 would pick up, with her trying to break the news to Ruby.
Just a theory. But I think it makes sense.
I don't think it is Reign either; and I like your theory; and I think it is plausible.
I don't think it is Reign either, but it certainly could be Sam fighting Reign within, and when she hears Ruby's voice it brings her back to Sam at the last minute. But I like the theory about telling Ruby about Supergirl.

We often talk about the music that is added to the episodes and how great a job they did first season. I think they're doing a good job this season also and, after repeated viewings of this episode, I really noticed its impact - specifically during the fight scene. The Christmas music at the beginning of the scene was, at first, almost a distraction but, now I see how it actually helped build the intensity of the fight.
The part that I really noticed was during the fight on the street. I'm not sure what the music was, or who the composer is, but the score was timed very well with what was going on in the fight. Specifically, how the instruments changed from a lighter (maybe clarinets, violins??) to deeper instruments (maybe tuba's and trombones?) when Reign headbutted Kara and she dropped to the ground and then crawled up the street. That change really emphasized to the viewer that, it was at that moment that the momentum of the fight had changed and that things were not going to go well for Kara. Great job!
--Sorry for the lack of musical technical terms or knowledge, my musical background consists entirely of listening pleasure only.
the music I noted the most the entire episode was Kara slowly, step-by-step, making it to the top of the street rubble. Totally ominous!

In time Kiwi or evrafter would have. I'd say the excitement for the crossover eclipses anything at the moment and normally discussions are not posted one week early.
Thanks for making this though
To be honest, im much more excited for the mid-season finale than the crossover. Im thrilled to see the continuations of the stories of mon-el, the legion of supe4heroes, and of course, reign.
To tell the truth, i think that the crossover came at a bad time for supergirl, because it ruin the momentum that the show got this week with mon-el's return and the awakening of reign.

I wonder what the big cliff hanger for the mid season finale is going to be. I initially thought it was going to be Kara finding out Sam is Reign, but that seems to early to make that reveal given what we've seen of the other arrow verse shows with a 'hidden identity' big bad. (Reign wears a mask)

Yeah, I don't think she finds out that Same is Reign in ep. 9......she fights her in ep. 9 however, and from the pics out there is slammed pretty hard....to the point of bleeding.
Bless her heart, she goes from Overgirl to Reign.....
Yeah, two khryptonians in two episodes...both sort of dark versions of herself. I think Sam will never be as bad as Overgirl is bc Overgirl is a nazi and Sams just under mind control/conditioning. (The real Sam would never do what Reign does)
A reveal to another person also wouldn't make much sense to me considering she just barely got the Reign identity this episode.

Why do you keep saying she is under mind control, she is not...she is a created being, created to be a World killer not mind controlled to be that, she is MADE TO BE THAT, it is in her DNA.

I gotta get through the crossover first......
Exactly, we've got 3 additional episodes of Melissa (plus Chyler and Jeremy) to enjoy yet before we start thinking about Episode 9.
We (Myself and evrafter) don't start new episode threads until after the previous one has screened and been discussed.
For Episode 9 I'm looking forward to Supergirl vs Reign Round 1, hopefully the start of some action driven episodes.
I wonder if we'll see Imra in her Saturn Girl costume this episode or that won't be till Episode 10 when Braniac 5 comes along, I'm interested to see what costume they go with for her.
I am doubtful that we will see them in full costume in Reign....I think this will simply be when we see Reign first using her power.....my thing is, how will she know how to fight?

EN "Im thrilled to see the continuations of the stories of mon-el, the legion of supe4heroes, and of course, reign."
How about the story of Kara/Supergirl?.
All those stories, in the end of the day, affect kara's life and story, so im not worry about that.
